Should I be concerned about cold injury to my wheat?

Wheat in our area has tillered and is greening up, but likely will not be affected by the cold, snowy days we’ve had in April. Wheat growth stages are measured according to the Feekes scale – the greening up stages are Feekes 4-5. In an Ohio State study, wheat at Feekes stages 4-5 showed very little injury at temperatures of 14-27 degrees F. For more information on how to manage your wheat according to its growth stages, see Managing Wheat by Growth Stage from Purdue Extension. These growth stages are also very important to timing your herbicide applications.
